year unof uncertainty if the white house fail to take action to avert the fiscal crisis or the cliff. president obama tock his message on the road speaking to auto workers to talk about the plan to cut taxes that will go into effect on january 1st if congress fails to act. >> what you need is a package that keeps taxes where they are for middle class families. we make some tough spending cuts on things that we don't need and then we ask the wealthiest americans to pay a slightly higher tax break. >> the president met privately with house speaker john boehner to discuss the matter. in a statement to fox business about that meeting speaker boehner's spokesman said discussions with the white house are taking place but we have no detail to share about the conversations. the republican offer made last week remains a republican offer. we continue to wait for the president to identify the spending cuts he has as part of the balanced approach he promised the american people. if they are going to reach a deal, there is still a lot of work to be done and very little time to do it. expert

president obama doesn't do regularly. and that is take a lot of questions from the white house press corp. that is where you get stronger and better answers, sometimes deeper answers to questions that america deserves to know. not -- the problem for president obama is that who he talked to yesterday is a narrow slice of the audience. more people know about that now than would have ever seen it on that other network. he needs broaden out and talk to and try to persuade people that are not just on the left. >> brian: you remember you invited charles charles and other conservatives before he actually took office? >> remember, they were charmed and they said, huh, maybe this is going to go better than we thought. and then they were bitterly disappointed. >> steve: let's talk a little bit about this. the congressman from in texas, steve forbes out yesterday talking about look, we've got to do something about taxes. the president is even talking a little bit about it. we need a flat tax rather than raising taxes. here is a little snippet of congressman gilbert. listen. >> when you hear fair sha

were against this. it was interesting because president obama was in michigan the day before, or yesterday, i forget -- and he was talking with how important it would be to veto this particular new law. there has been no response from the white house with regard to some of the violence that happened yesterday. what do you make of it? >> i was surprised that president obama got so deeply involved with one speech on monday. you're right, it was this week. but governor snyder is it a -- is a very mild mannered person. he's a self-made man, he's doing public service because he wants to help improve michigan. i have no doubt that his intentions are to help bring jobs back to michigan. the violence is not in keeping with what -- i don't think what any of us would expect at an american protest. they have a right to protest. i think the least that anybody could do is to say, we don't want any violence of any sort. we condemn the violence. the statements about foreign policy out at the state department are more i guess strict or admonishing than what you got from the white house about thi

republicans say there will be no deal if tax ritz go up and the obama administration says it's ready to go thelma and louise style over the cliff on january 1. if that's the case, wendell goler live at the white house with what we know is going on behind the scenes. anything happening? >> steve, the president and house speaker john boehner talked on the phone yesterday, but they agreed not to characterize their conversation. so it's unclear how much progress they made. from the outside, it does seem they've moved a bit closer with boehner now agreeing to raise tax collection from the wealthy, though not by raising tax rates. >> we've got to cut spending and i believe to put revenues on the table. the revenues we're putting on the table will come from, guess who, the rich! there are ways to limit deductions, close loopholes, and have the same people pay more of their money to the federal government without raising tax rates which we believe will harm our economy. >> the president lobbied big business leaders yesterday with an appearance at the business round table. his aides say you c
